The following list is a compilation of some of the least known, underrated, yet unbelievably beautiful places on Earth. 1) Tunnel of Love, Klevan, Ukraine. Most people think this is some kind of an old abandoned railway but no, it’s actually fully functional and the train delivers wood to the fibreboard factory 3 times a day. It is said that if you and your loved one visit the Tunnel of Love and make a wish, it will come true. Next time you’re in Ukraine don’t forget to go there and wish for a million dollars to make your other wishes come true! 2) Melissani Cave, Kefalonia, Greece Ancient Greeks believed that the Melissani cave was a home of nymphs – dieties of unspoken beauty, who lured men into the cave and drowned them. Cool, huh? But those are only legends and the cave is incredibly beautiful when it’s illuminated under a high sun. 3) The Alcazar of Segovia, Spain Everyone loves castles, especially if in winter they look like this. Even from the distance you can tell it sits in the most strategically advantageous spot and has been in quite a few medieval battles, yet it still stands. Or should I say “floats”? If you look at it from up close, you can see it’s shaped like a ship. Neat! 4) Lord Howe Island, Australia Australia is usually cheerful and crawling with spiders, snakes and other nopes but this part of it, the Lord Howe island, is actually pretty cool. If you want to dive into a beautiful crystal lagoon or the adjacent coral reefs, you’d need to be extremely lucky (or rich), as only 400 tourists are allowed to visit the island each year. 5) Þingvallavatn Lake, Iceland This unpronounceable Icelandic lake formed on the junction point of 2 tectonic plates. If you’re lucky and an experienced diver, you can actually swim between those plates. Definitely one of the best lakes Mother Nature’s ever created. 6) Aescher, Switzerland It’s a freaking hotel on the side of a freaking mountain. How cool is that? Okay, there’s no TV, internet or wi-fi, so pack your books and get ready for some adventuring, because the trails near Aescher will lead you to surprisingly gorgeous spots. 7) Bagan, Burma Bagan is a really creepy/stunning (depending on what you like) ancient city hidden deep inside Burma. It used to have over 9,000 Buddhist temples, over 2000 of which are still intact and probably haunted. 8) Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Paro Valley, Bhutan A 300-year old buddhist temple overseeing the Paro Valley from 30,000 feet above. It was built to protect the cave where Guru Padmasambhava spent 3 years, 3 months, 3 days and 3 hours meditating. Why wasn’t it built at 33,333 feet is beyond me. 9) Chichilianne, Rhone Alpes, France I’m not saying Game of Thrones actually happened but when I look at the 7,000 foot tall Mont Aiguille, hovering over the town, all I can think of is “winter is coming”. The white walkers are coming! The white walkers are coming! 10) Ristorante Grotta Palazzese, Italy When visiting Italy don’t forget to check out the caves of Polignano a Mare beach. You’ll find an amazing restaurant there and with a view like that, I’d probably be glad to eat pebbles and seaweed just to stay there for a few minutes longer.
